Ready for the Mountain, Before You Fly

Skiing is unusual. It asks your body to do something demanding, for six hours a day, for a week, once a year, at altitude, usually after a big lunch.

Almost no other sport works like that. You wouldn't run a marathon on no training, but a remarkable number of people fly out on the Saturday having done nothing since last February.

The best time to see us is October to December, not the week before you fly.

The things that tend to cause trouble on a mountain are the things already quietly bothering you at home: a hip that doesn't rotate properly, a lower back that grumbles after an hour in the car, a knee that complains going downstairs. None of them matter much in Putney. All of them matter on day three in Val d'Isère.

We'll assess how you move, treat what needs treating, and give you specific things to work on in the weeks you've actually got.

January to March is our other season for this.

The classic is the person who felt fine on the slopes and seized up on the flight home. Also common: the fall that seemed like nothing at the time, the back that went on the last morning, and the shoulder that met the ground at speed.

We treat minor injuries and tensions, back and neck pain, joint pain and muscle spasm. If we think something needs imaging or an orthopaedic opinion, we'll tell you straight away rather than working around it.

Different sport, different injuries. More wrists, shoulders and tailbones, fewer knees. The same principle applies to both: the fitter and more mobile you arrive, the better the week goes.
