Chiropractic for Kids in Putney
From Newborns to Sixth Formers
There are usually buggies in our hallway. We're a family practice, and on a given morning the waiting room might have a three-week-old, a teenage rower and someone's grandmother in it at the same time.
Parents bring children to us for all sorts of reasons. Here's what we can honestly tell you about each.
We see a lot of newborns, usually because a parent has been recommended by a friend, a midwife or another parent at a class.
We'll be straight with you, because this is an area where a lot of clinics aren't. For older children and teenagers, chiropractic has a solid role in musculoskeletal problems. For babies, the evidence base is thinner, and we're not going to tell you otherwise or promise you outcomes we can't stand behind.
What we will do is assess your baby properly, tell you what we find, and be honest about whether we think we're the right people. If we're not, we'll say so and point you towards your GP, health visitor or a lactation consultant. That answer costs you one appointment and saves you months.
If we do go ahead, the treatment is very light. The pressure is about what you'd use to check whether a peach is ripe. Babies are usually held by a parent throughout, often asleep, and it's frequently over in a couple of minutes.
School-age children turn up with the same things adults do, just from different causes. Back and neck pain, joint pain, aches after a growth spurt, the strain of a school bag worn on one shoulder for six years running.
Appointments are shorter and considerably less serious than adult ones. We explain what we're doing to the child, not just over their head to you, and you're in the room the whole time.
Teenagers are the group we probably see most, and they're often the ones in genuine discomfort.
Between sport, growth, exam terms spent hunched over a desk and a phone held at chest height for several hours a day, the fifteen-year-old back takes a beating. Sporting injuries, back and neck pain, shoulder complaints, joint pain: all of it, all the time. Putney being Putney, a decent share of it arrives in rowing kit.
