Muscle Pain & Cramps in Putney
How Muscle Pain & Cramps Affect Your Movement and Daily Life
This is the complaint people are most likely to put up with.
Back pain sends you to someone. Feeling permanently tight doesn’t, quite, and so it goes on for years. People tell us they’re "just tight", as though it were a personality trait rather than something happening in their body.
What People Come in With
Muscle that aches and never quite lets go. Spasm that locks you mid-movement and takes your breath away. Cramp in the calf or foot at two in the morning. Tightness across the neck and shoulders that turns up on the same days as everything else in your life turning up.
That last one is worth saying plainly. A lot of muscular tension is held rather than caused. When people can't switch off, it tends to show up somewhere physical, and for most of us it's the neck and shoulders.
Why the Sore Spot Often Isn't the Cause
If a muscle is working harder than it should be, it's usually compensating for something. A joint that isn't moving well. A pattern of movement built around an old injury you'd stopped thinking about.
You can dig into the sore spot all you like, and it'll feel better for a day or two. Then it'll come back, because nothing has changed about why it was working so hard in the first place.
So we assess how you move before we treat anything. That's the part that stops this being a very expensive massage.
What Treatment Looks Like
Hands-on work on the muscle and the joints around it, plus specific things for you to do at home. With recurring muscle pain, the home part is usually where the lasting change happens. We'll keep it to a realistic number of exercises, because a list of twelve gets done for four days and then never again.
When it Isn't Us
Not all muscle pain is mechanical. Dehydration, certain medications and a handful of medical conditions all cause cramp, and no amount of treatment from us will touch those. If that's what it looks like, we'll say so and suggest you see your GP.
One specific thing: if you get sudden pain, swelling and warmth in one calf, treat that as urgent and contact 111 or your GP the same day rather than booking with us.
