Keeping You on the Road

You can stand on Putney Bridge at seven in the morning and watch most of our patient list go past.

The towpath, the Richmond Park loop, the Saturday run out towards the Surrey Hills. It's a good part of London for both sports and our diary reflects it.

Running and cycling are repetitive in a very narrow range. Thousands of near-identical movements, in one plane, at a similar load, over and over.

That’s what makes you good at them. It’s also why the injuries are so predictable. Things don’t usually break in these sports so much as accumulate, which is why the honest answer to “when did it start?” is often “I’m not sure.”

Back and neck pain, hip and knee pain, muscle spasm and cramp, minor injuries and tensions, and the niggle that's been there for six weeks and is now changing how you run.

Cyclists bring us necks and lower backs. Runners bring us hips, knees and calves. Both bring us the same reluctance to take a week off.

What changed. That's nearly always where the answer is.

Mileage jumped. A new pair of shoes. A new bike or a fit that was adjusted in March. A block ramped up too fast because a race got closer. Coming back after time off at the load you were at before the break rather than the load you're at now.

We know what happens when you tell a runner to stop running. Mostly they say yes and then don’t.

So we’ll work hard to find a version that keeps you moving, even if it’s a reduced or altered version for a few weeks. We won’t pretend a plan is fine when it isn’t, but “complete rest” is a last resort here rather than a default.
