What is a chiropractor? (and how does it differ from osteopathy)

Chiropractors locate and correct areas of spinal dysfunction that can cause nervous system interference and/or back pain. We do this by gently adjusting the spine, returning its normal flexibility and alignment which removes back pain and allows the body to function better. Osteopaths work more with the circulatory system and muscles, with less focus on the nervous system.

What is subluxation?

A subluxation is when the delicate balance of normal movement in your spine is upset. It consists of a combination of poor intervertebral segment movement, spinal nerve root irritation and segmental muscle spasm. Essentially a bone in your spine can become locked – pressuring the nerves and causing the muscles to spasm.

What is an adjustment?

A chiropractor uses a carefully directed and controlled pressure in a precise direction to a joint that is not moving properly, thereby allowing the spine to return to a normally balanced and flexible state

How is an adjustment given?

Many different ways. It may be a quick movement or slow constant pressure, sometimes only one area may be adjusted and sometimes the entire spine will receive attention.

What is the popping sound?

The same as a knuckle cracking. It indicates the joint has stretched apart and separated slightly which can cause a release of tiny gas bubbles in the joint.

Will I need X-Rays?

Only if necessary. It depends on what your chiropractor finds during the consultation and examination. They are an important diagnostic tool that prevent Chiropractors from having to guess or take chances. Without them it would be like asking a car mechanic to work on the car without lifting the bonnet!

How often will I need to come?

In the beginning you will need more frequent adjustments in order to mobilise your spine and stimulate the start of improved spinal function – this will usually result in the relief of aches or pain. Repetition of the treatment at the beginning is similar to training the body to perform a new task, the more it’s done, the quicker your body is able to hold the new balanced state. The frequency of your visits is reduced as your spinal function improves.

How long will it take to get well?

Healing takes time and differs from person to person.

How much will it cost?

This varies from individual to individual, and depends on factors such as the length of time the problem has been present, the motivation to get well, the ability to carry out home care instructions (exercises, stretches, etc).

What is N.E.T.?

Neuro Emotional Technique is a psychosomatic intervention used to restore health and balance to the body. It is an effective, natural way of relieving health problems that have an emotional component. Many of us have felt the effect of stress on our bodies at one time or another; falling ill when very busy at work or study; or getting ‘knots’ or ‘butterflies’ in our stomach when nervous. It is normal to have emotions such as these, however, during extended periods of stress or ill health the body can lose its ability to adapt and ‘let go’ of these emotions, causing health problems further down the track and making any existing complaint worse. 4 reasons people don’t go to a chiropractor:

1. I doubt a chiropractor is able to help me with my concerns.

Our office has been in existence for over 25 years and we have helped thousands of people with their health needs. We are extremely confident that we can provide great benefit for those who seek our professional care.

Chiropractic is built on a simple premise that to recover from any health challenge we are reliant on certain requirements being met.

  • We need adequate nutrition
  • We need adequate rest
  • We need adequate movement/exercise
  • We need a HEALTHY 100% NERVOUS SYSTEM function.

We are able to help with all of these points, whether it is through lifestyle guidance, conducting relevant health education evenings and most importantly by laying on of the hands.

We focus on conducting a proper consultation and examination then recommend strategies to enable you to heal naturally.

All people can at times suffer from NERVE SYSTEM pressure. Sometimes this hurts. Other times it is not obvious. Whether it is noticeable or not, we require a strong healthy nerve system function to thrive. Our chiropractic hands on approach is a safe, gentle and modern way of allowing you to heal and live at your best.

2. Once I start seeing the chiropractor I have to go forever.

Chiropractic, like exercise and eating well is one of those this that is best done through out life but we understand that everyone has different goals. At Putney Chiropractic we are committed to working with you to understanding what YOUR individual needs and wants are.

All people are different and we pride ourselves on being flexible enough to meet your needs. Some people want a specific complaint dealt with and then choose to cease care. Others choose to view their health as a gift to nurture long term and incorporate ongoing chiropractic health care in their “be my best” strategy.

In essence at Putney Chiropractic it’s all about choice, and that means you continue chiropractic care for as long as YOU want to enjoy the benefits.

Whatever you choose we are here to serve you and make your experience as beneficial as possible.

3. I don't want my neck or back cracked.

There are many different chiropractic adjusting methods. Some methods involve the spine “cracking” or making “popping” sounds. But it is important to know that there are many other techniques that our practitioners are skilled in, that do not make those type of sounds.

Let’s take a quick look into what that “cracking” sound is. With some adjustments you may sometimes feel or hear popping or cracking sound. This is simply caused by a gas release from the joint as spinal movement is restored, similar to what you might hear when a wet glass is removed from a table.

Whilst some people really enjoy the feeling of the spine moving and making some noises, others are not so keen. We work with you to determine the best methods to assist you, whilst also ensuring that we use adjustments that you are comfortable with.

It is worth noting that we have regular attending clients that range in age from newborn right through to people in their 90’s. We alter our methods to suit you!

4. Chiropractic care costs too much.

Paying for health care is something that may seem foreign to many people with such a great NHS system in place in the UK. However chiropractic is not covered by the NHS. There are several reasons why this is the case. It is unlikely to change in the immediate future so chiropractic will remain a private health care option

When we don’t feel well or our health is not at 100% it is difficult to enjoy our friends, family, and pastimes. These are the things we work hard for and are most important to us. Chiropractic care is an inexpensive way of greatly boosting health and therefore enjoying life more.

We have a very fair fee structure and we do offer a variety of fee choices in order to make receiving the care you need more manageable.
