I’m pregnant! When should I see a chiropractor?

First off, congratulations! Pregnancy is a wonderful time for future mums and dads but that’s not to say that sometimes it can put an enormous amount of strain on your body with all the change you’ll be going through and with your baby’s growth.

Chiropractic care in pregnancy creates balance, ensuring that the mother’s spine and nervous system can work at their optimal capacity – critical with the changes taking place in her body and providing the best possible environment for the developing baby.

Here’s what to expect through the different stages:

Conception to 12 weeks (1st trimester) – all about keeping the mums brain and body connected as it its the 1st trimester that all the magic of life creation happens.
– 12weeks to 28 weeks (2nd trimester) – brain and body and postural changes begin – perfect time to make sure all parts of your spine and muscluloskeletal system are relaxed so baby positioning is optimal.

– 28 weeks to 40 weeks (3rd trimeseter) – brain and body, postural changes, strain and stress on all pelvic and spinal structures, sometimes late into the 3rd trimester you find your baby is breech and emergency sessions are needed to help you relax to help the baby turn

– Delivery – having a balanced and relaxed muscluloskeletal system helps with an uncomplicated labour (shorter)

Chiropractic care has also been shown to reduce labour time for women who had care throughout their pregnancy. In her study, Dr Joan Fallon found that first-time mums averaged a 24% shorter labour, while experienced mothers (those who had given birth before) had a 39% reduction in the average labour time in a substantial percentage of births.*
