Your central nervous system is essentially your body’s main computer and affects every part of your body. It is for this reason that pain or disruption to the nerves can have a huge impact on how your body functions and therefore your quality of life. The longest nerve in your body is the sciatic nerve which runs from your pelvis right down to your feet. Sciatica refers to any sort of pain that is caused by irritation of this nerve.
Nerve pain and sciatica can be caused by many different factors. The most common cause of sciatica is a slipped disc, but it can also be brought on by causes such as injury, infection or a growth on the spine.
Other nerve pain can be triggered by various factors such as existing medical problems, toxins such as high levels of alcohol, trauma and nutritional deficiencies. There are many people suffering from nerve pain who have no idea of the cause.
As nerves exist in different locations all over your body and come in all sorts of sizes, the symptoms you may experience vary enormously. It depends entirely on the type and location of nerves that are affected.
Symptoms of sciatica can be mild to extremely painful and can last from a few days to several months. The pain comes from the lower back and can spread through the buttocks and into the legs. This pain can become worse over time and intensified by standing or sitting for long periods of time, coughing, laughing or bending backwards. As well as pain, people suffering from sciatica can also experience numbness, tingling and weakened muscles.
