Cycling: Racing and Performance

Doc Craig McLean has been mixing it with top London track cyclists and even a Commonwealth games gold medalist and Grand tour winner at the Olympic Park Lee Valley Velodrome on a Monday night. You can pop down an see him and others between 7-10pm on a Monday night with the door charge the grand sum of £2. It’s quite a new thing for Craig but he’s taken to it well.

Here is a race report from the second night of racing earlier this month.

‘Last night saw the second round of the Lee Valley Winter Track League promoted by Full Gas Cycling. As if the boards of the Olympic Velodrome weren’t fast enough, the organisers thought it funny to invite Grand Tour stage winner Alex Dowsett as a special guest rider to make things a little more “interesting”.

It was certainly inspiring and flattering for Mr Dowsett to join the lowly ranks of the A category and with that, the racing was hot all night.

In the opening scratch race George bagged a fifth place in a bunch sprint. Next up, was the 50 lap points race and track rookie Craigo McLean, also a powerhouse, was sitting in third place for much of the race after featuring in the first two sprints only to slide out of the top five in the finish.

After a couple of B cat races it was Devil time and Nuuns best placed rider was Cam placing 6th after getting boxed by none other than Mr A Dowsett.

The last race of the evening for the ‘A’s’ was a 50 lap scratch race. After a tentative start (perhaps everyone was tired) the pace soon took off the Dowsett launching a few strong moves, albeit on a tiny 88″ gear. George looked favourite to bag some points in the bunch kick but just slipped out of the placings.

Overall, another safe and fun night of racing. Our thanks to the organisers and to David Powell and his collection of images (’
