INJURY STORIES

Testimonial Dr Michael – Healing & Recovery
 • Dr Michael – Healing & Recovery

Dr Michael is back from a 3 month layoff with a serious injury. After his rehabilitation he has shared his experience on recovery and healing.
Well after my little tete a tete with a large deer in Richmond park on my bicycle I struggled to see much positive from the experience.
A full afternoon of surgery, along with metal pieces in both my elbow and shoulder was not on my life bucket list.
But as with all aspects of life there was some positive in the experience. Sitting at home watching Australia smash south Africa in the cricket was one of the highlights!
Being quite incapacitated meant that to stay sane, I gradually slowed my life down and didn’t try to pack too much into too little time. After all, I had all day to do quite little. Taking more time in life is a liberating experience and after being in London, gradually speeding everything up previously it was a positive experience to slow things down again and reflect on things in a bit more detail.

When did you first come to Putney Chiropractic?
I came to Putney Chiropractor after meeting the team at the ‘Ski & Snowboard Show’ in 2011
Why did you first come to see us here?
I had a back problem for over a year and kept putting it off, mainly because being a ‘bloke’, I would just put up with the pain thinking it was due to over-doing it at work or with the sports activities I do. I had a short conversation at the show with Dr Craig, who suggested I came along for a consultation and maybe a few x-rays. I must admit, at first I though this was the normal ‘spin’ to get you in the door…. I have since been proved very, very wrong!
What changes have you noticed since starting care with us?
In the months I have been with Putney Chiropractor, I have learnt more about my back and the problems I have and how to avoid certain situations/exercises which can cause me problems.
What is your understanding of chiropractic care and how it can benefit your health and lifestyle?
I more so understand that this is not a quick fix and that to get the best results, a small or minor correction a month lasts longer than having frequently heavy sessions every 6 months.

Testimonial Recovering from a broken leg
 • Recovering from a broken leg

Our resident Chiropractor and ironically a renowned ski injury expert, turned the focus on himself recently when he fractured his leg while skiing in Canada late in the 2012 ski season. Below is an outline of what was involved in the recovery process taking him from a shattered leg and shattered dream of working at the London 2012 Olympics, to a recovery that has amazed leading surgeons and physiotherapists.
Update April 2013
Ski trip Easter 2013 – putting the mental demons to bed. Twelve months nearly to the day of the leg break I headed off to Val d’Isere, France to test the knee and to take the family for our first family ski week. I started conservatively with a few nervous moments and flashbacks to the previous year’s injury – initially I stayed on piste and enjoyed a different type of skiing which involved skiing on piste and stopping at some of the great mountain restaurants Val d’Isere had to offer. My confidence in the knee grew as the week went on and ended the week off piste and shredding some great pow!(see the pic below) Thanks to Phin my long suffering wife for helping me through this horrible injury, my kids for keeping me smiling, my surgeon Mr Bell, Wimbledon Clinics , James my physio, who I still see every week has helped transform me to the fittest and strongest I’ve been in 20 years and the Putney Chiro team for stepping up and running things while I was gone. Thanks everyone!

Testimonial Bryony’s Story – sports injury
 • Bryony’s Story – sports injury

Why did you first come to Putney Chiropractic Centre?
I came to PCC because I’d been knocked off my bike while training a month before and was still in quite a lot of pain in my lower back, neck and shoulder. I really wanted to do a 14km swim in the Thames in a month’s time and needed help!
What did the Chiropractor tell you was going on?
Luke explained that some key joints in my spine weren’t working properly and were interfering with the nerve supply to my lower back and shoulder. This made sense to me as things certainly hadn’t felt right since my bike accident.
How did you respond to your Chiropractic care?
After a few adjustments Luke said I could start swimming again and get some much needed training! The rotation in my neck was starting to improve but my shoulder was still quite uncomfortable after I’d swam for 15 mins. Considering I needed to be able to swim 14kms I must admit I was a little worried I’d make it.

Testimonial Craig's Story
 • Craig's Story

Dr Craig McLean, Doctor of Chiropractic talks of his personal account of a past episode of low back pain and leg pain, “Disc herniation – I know all about how backs can perform well and I also how they can sometimes let you down. In 2003 I suffered a massive disc herniation at the L4-5 level. This resulted in severe left leg pain and muscle weakness to the point where I could no longer walk.
Disc herniations commonly occur due to long standing repeated micro trauma to the lumbar discs. My history involved a combination of long distance cycling, triathlon, golf, rowing, surfing, skiing and leaning over patients all day as a chiropractor. Normal personal challenges and some added life-stresses together with some biomechanical abnormalities resulted in my disc gradually giving way.
Over the initial three months I was on the chiropractic table daily having a combination of techniques aimed at reducing the pressure on the sciatic nerve.

I first came to see Edwina 5 years ago after a trip round South East Asia with a backpack that was probably just a bit too heavy (taking the kitchen sink not always the best option)! From then till now Edwina and the team have helped me through some amazing times in my life, 4 days lost in a kayak in the Swedish Archipelagos, then the time I decided to go running in the Sahara for fun, more recently I broke my ribs out training for the French Riviera Marathon.
My plan was simple, a slightly shortened training programme of 8 weeks then off to run 42k from Nice to Cannes, unfortunately I managed to trip while out training and break my ribs 2 weeks in! Edwina was my first port of call after the trip to the hospital, with some intense and painful sessions she managed to get my ribs moving and 6 weeks later I ran my first marathon in a time of 4hrs 28 which I loved so much I had the chance to run and totally enjoy the London marathon without any broken bones this time.
By the time you read this I will be either biking through Southern China or climbing Mt Kili, all of the great trips have been made possible by Edwina keeping me together with weekly or monthly adjustments. Every time I have an adjustment leave feeling a million dollars and I can’t say enough about how much the team have done for me, in my eyes maintenance is prevention and treatment should not be a one-off.

Since I retired from World Cup skiing in 1983, I have had continuing problems with the mobility in my neck. The wear and tear of crashing down icy mountains at 85 mph resulted in regular and frequent stiffening of my neck to the extent that I searched for all and any solutions. Physio – Chiropractor – Osteopath – I have tried them all.
Some worked in assisting a short term solution, however I would still get a serious tightening of the neck on average once a year. Thanks to a friend’s recommendation, I thought I would try a different solution with the Putney Chiropractic.

I started seeing Edwina five months ago after I hurt my back unloading the dishwasher – I’d had a horse riding accident a few years before and after switching from horse riding to rowing, my back was prone to frequent niggles and the slightest awkward movement could set it off again.
I had to spend weeks at a time out of the boat in an attempt to let the injury settle back down and while my physio was great at trying to keep me training through it, there were still long periods of time where I was having to manage my training around my injury and it was still prone to flaring up.
