We’re mad on skiing and snowboarding at Putney Chiropractic. Dr Craig has been heavily involved in the ski industry since 1999 and he understands the particular demands skiing places especially on the spine. Get fit for skiing and boarding
The below exercise routines have been put together by the team at Putney Chiro and are designed to get your body strong and flexible for the demands winter sport places on your body. The videos are self explanatory and should only be attempted once you’ve had the all clear from your chiropractor or proactive GP. Benefits for everyone
Internationally renowned skiers regularly visit our practice when in London to ensure their bodies are up to the demands high performance skiing places on it. We help Warren Smith, current Volkl International Freeride Team, maintain a high level of strength and flexibility. Graham Bell was due a further shoulder operation which has now been postponed and we have enabled him to keep on with his downhill runs when filming for the BBC’s Ski Sunday program. Konrad Bartelski, ex world cup downhill racer, had his troublesome neck injury resolved at PCC.

Since 2002 we have been working closely alongside the Warren Smith Ski Academy, based in Verbier. Dr Craig is a member of Warren’s bio-mechanics and physiology experts. The relationship began after Warren noted that some of his academy clients were unable to perform various movements that are vital to ski technique progression. He found the use of specific chiropractic techniques combined with expert coaching advice helped to remove biomechanical blockages to hips, ankles and low back, allowing the individual to achieve far greater results on the mountain. Warren has been a valued client of Putney Chiropractic for many years.

Prepare your body for the piste
Working with many skiers, from very experienced to total novices, we have noticed that most found that they were compromised to some extent with their movement and flexibility on the slopes. We can work in association with specialized ski boot fitters and ski coaches so all three areas are covered with regards to correct equipment, coaching and body performance.

The PCC Assessment
The assessment at Putney Chiropractic involves looking at two different areas of imbalance. The first involves a bio-mechanical testing including range of motion and flexibility, and second is a neurological assessment to determine the neuro-muscular deficiencies unique to each individual including myotomal strength, core strength and proprioception.

If imbalances are found in either the biomechanics or the neurology then a course of treatment is set to attempt to resolve these blockages. Benefits can include improvement in:

- Significant turn preference (often a physiological reason behind this and can be addressed)
- Poor fore/aft control (back seat skiing – can be helped with chiropractic, fitness and a great pair of boots)
- Early leg burn (often poor positioning)
- Back, leg, knee or foot pain (skiing should not cause you undue pain)
- Slow technical development (hitting that dreaded plateau)
- Office to piste transition (51 weeks at the desk, on throwing yourself down a mountain)

Bespoke program of care
Clients are presented with a report and a unique tailored program using bespoke combination chiropractic treatment, ski specific exercises, and alignment correction. We promote the importance of core strength and training before heading off to the piste. Our exercises are designed to improve optimal range of motion and strength across the key joints used while skiing to increase performance and reduce the chance of injury.
